The VVB is not a vendor to be minimised. It is the party whose judgement determines whether your credits exist, and the selection decision affects both the outcome and the timeline more than most developers expect.
Accreditation and Scope
| Dimension | What it determines |
|---|---|
| Accreditation standard | Usually ISO 14065 or programme-specific; establishes basic competence |
| Sectoral scope | Whether the body is approved for AFOLU as against energy or industrial |
| Activity scope | Whether it covers your specific activity type — ARR, REDD+, IFM, wetlands |
| Geographic scope | Whether it is approved to work in your jurisdiction |
A body accredited for AFOLU generally is not automatically approved for every activity within it. Checking scope against your specific methodology before engagement avoids the worst discovery in the process — that the audit cannot be completed by the body you contracted.
Selection Factors That Matter
Experience with your methodology, not merely your sector. A body that has audited many projects under the same methodology will identify issues faster and ask more predictable questions.
Ecosystem familiarity. Peat, mangrove and savanna each have failure modes a generalist auditor may not probe — and may not accept explanations for.
Capacity and timing. Accredited bodies in AFOLU are a limited pool, and scheduling can dominate the critical path. Booking late is how a verification slips a season.
Independence constraints. A body that has advised on project design may be barred from auditing it. Worth confirming before, not after.
What You Cannot Buy
You cannot choose a body for leniency, and attempting to is visible. Accreditation bodies monitor their auditors, programmes review findings, and a verification statement from a body with a reputation for waving projects through is worth less to a serious buyer than one from a rigorous auditor.
The efficient goal is a body that is rigorous and familiar — which finds problems early, when they are cheap.
Move beyond estimates
Verifiers test sampling design, uncertainty and whether a number traces back to the field. TREEO dMRV captures that evidence in real time, in one auditable chain.
