The project aims to develop a sustainable social forest management program that fully involves the community and positively impacts the environment.
Through a collaborative partnership between the responsible teak plantation management company, PT Sele Raya Agri (SRA), and TREEO, the initiative combines sustainable teak plantation, regenerative agroforestry farming, and dMRV to create measurable climate and community impact.
From Fallow Land to Productive Forest
Field surveys and ground-truthing confirmed that the selected land is severely degraded and characterized by low-nutrient soil. Land cover analysis showed a significant transition from secondary forest to fallow and vacant land between 2012 and 2020.
This reforestation effort creates additional climate, ecological, and livelihood impact by transforming unproductive, unmanaged land into a productive ecosystem that can generate sustainable revenue opportunities for the community.
What's Being Planted and the Business Model Behind It
The project targets the planting and maintenance of 36,000 teak Tectona grandis (teak) trees. PT SRA is responsible for producing, distributing, and planting the seedlings, as well as maintenance, weeding, replanting where required, and annual tree monitoring during the 30-year project period. Based on recent alignments, the project adapts its harvest cycle from 10 to 15 years or until trees reach a minimum diameter threshold of 30 cm.
The selected species supports long-term ecological restoration, carbon accumulation, and potential community livelihood benefits. This creates direct livelihood benefits through a 17% community revenue-sharing model from timber sales, alongside the development of non-timber forest products such as honey, natural dyes, rattan, and resin.

TREEO's Digital Approach
Through single-tree monitoring app solutions, smallholder farmers across Indonesia are empowered to digitize their forests. Utilizing smartphone cameras, our dMRV (digital Measurement, Reporting, and Verification) system analyzes tree trunk diameter, canopy coverage, and species growth over time. Each tree receives a unique digital identity, linking precise carbon sequestration calculations with trusted global buyers.
Monitoring Technology Adjustments
Deploying digital monitoring tools on the ground required specific adaptations to overcome technical barriers. To assist field operators having difficulty finding plot locations, an offline map feature was introduced specifically to guide planting activities, ensuring that operators can only plant within the correct designated plots. This functionality is crucial for anticipating and minimizing the number of trees planted outside the agreed boundaries. Furthermore, a monitoring configuration was set up to restrict tracking exclusively to the inside of the plots, guaranteeing that operators only monitor the correct trees.
Scaling Verified Climate Action
The transition from manual estimations to digital solutions has delivered substantial benefits. Communities not only see their local environment thrive, but also receive fair compensation based on high-integrity carbon credits. By securing 98% accuracy in forest biometric tracking, TREEO Indonesia is closing the gap between smallholder efforts and global environmental.
Why This Project Matters
Muna demonstrates a model where reforestation and rural economic development aren't competing priorities, they're designed to reinforce each other. By combining long-term tenure, calibrated carbon methodology, adaptive field technology, and a direct community stake in timber revenue, the project offers a replicable template for restoring degraded industrial forest land at scale, without leaving the people who live there behind.
